Das Substantiv bedeutet »Muster, Form; Vorbild; Entwurf; Person, die sich als Gegenstand bildnerischer oder fotografischer Darstellung zur Verfügung stellt; Mannequin«. Es wurde um 1600 als Fachausdruck der bildenden Kunst aus gleichbed. it. modello entlehnt, das auf vlat. *modellus zurückgeht.
Dies steht für klass.-lat. modulus »Maß; Maßstab«, eine Verkleinerungsbildung zu lat. modus »Maß« (vgl. ↑ Modus). Unmittelbar aus lat. modulus stammt 1Model »Maß, Form, Muster« (schon ahd. modul, mhd. model), das durch »Modell« zurückgedrängt wurde und heute nur noch in der Handwerkerfachsprache, in südd. Mundarten und in Österreich (hier speziell im Sinne von »Kuchenform«) lebendig ist, ferner in dem abgeleiteten Zeitwort 1modeln »gestalten, in eine Form bringen« (mhd. modelen), beachte dazu ummodeln ugs. für »verändern«. Gleichfalls aus lat. modulus stammt engl. module, aus dem in der 2. Hälfte des 20. Jh.s unser Modul »Bau- oder Schaltungseinheit« übernommen wurde. Zur etwa selben Zeit aus dem Engl. übernommen wurde in der Bedeutung »Mannequin, Fotomodell« das zur selben Wortfamilie gehörende 2Model. Hiervon abgeleitet wurde das Verb 2modeln »als Fotomodell arbeiten«.
